Kössen Formation

Not the best-known of all rock formations but certainly provided a bonus with a beautiful and bizarre early pterosaur.

The Kössen Formation is a Late Triassic rock formation in Germany and parts of the Swiss Alps. It is composed mainly of limestone and preserves bones of the primitive pterosaur Caviramus.

This weird little creature was one of the earliest pterosaurs in existence and was found in a place where few would think to look: The alpine border of Switzerland and Italy.
